MULUNGUSHI UNIVERSITY GETS INNOVATION CENTRE

Mulungushi University has taken a significant step towards technological advancement and international cooperation following the official launch of the Zambia Belt and Road Innovation Cooperation Centre (ZBRICC) at the University’s main campus in Kapiri Mposhi District, Central Province.

The centre, a partnership between the university and the Belt and Road Institute of Science and Technology (BRIST) of China, aims to serve as a hub for research, innovation, and skills development aligned with Zambia’s national development agenda.

Speaking at the launch, the Minister of Education, Honourable Douglas Syakalima, emphasized the importance of education in transforming the country’s socio-economic landscape.
“This initiative signals our country’s bold step toward embracing innovation, international cooperation, and 21st-century skills development,” he stated.

The Minister praised Mulungushi University’s management for its strategic vision in forging partnerships that enhance research and academic relevance.

He highlighted that the centre aligns with Zambia’s 8th National Development Plan, which emphasizes science, technology, and skills training as drivers of growth.
The event marked the Minister’s second visit to Mulungushi University, reflecting his continued support for higher education collaborations.

Previously, he officiated the launch of the International Institute of Online Education (IIOE) Zambia National Centre for Higher Education at the same institution.

“The Zambia Belt and Road Innovation Cooperation Centre will link academic research with industrial application, fostering local knowledge with global expertise,” the Minister said.

He further highlighted the centre’s focus on critical areas such as entrepreneurship, artificial intelligence, vocational training, engineering, agriculture, and health.

“The relevance of the Belt and Road Initiative, if well implemented, will greatly improve higher education quality and promote international partnerships,” he added.

He called on universities, the private sector, international partners, and young Zambians to harness the opportunities provided by ZBRICC to ensure Zambia remains competitive in the global knowledge economy.

Before concluding his address, Mr. Syakalima expressed hope that the centre will become a beacon of research and innovation.

As Zambia continues to focus on building an inclusive, innovative, and resilient education system, the establishment of ZBRICC marks a significant milestone. It underscores the country’s commitment to integrating technology, fostering research, and creating opportunities for its youth to lead in the global digital age.

The centre is expected to play a pivotal role in equipping Zambia’s youth with the skills needed to thrive amidst rapid technological change and shifting labor markets.

It aims to foster South–South cooperation, knowledge exchange, and infrastructure development—key components of the Belt and Road Initiative.
